Kate Jones

THE STORY OF KATE JONES

I did the following research because I was looking for, and still looking for William Henry Steele born 1883. In 1891 he is living with Sarah Aspinall in Golborne described as grandson. It became the story of Kate Jones - his mother. I was looking to see if in 1901 William was with his mother's family.

(Interesting parallels to the Howard family is Warrington, cotton workers, possible extended links through the Clayton family - William Barrow and John Howard both lodging in Farnworth together, Thomas Clayton married Sarah Bennett, and movement to Oldham)

names in captials share genes with me
...........................................................................
1871 Warrington, all born Warrington
James Jones 31 shoemaker
Dinah 40
Mary Ann 17
Kate 12
Eliza 11
Hannah 4
James 2
Peter 2 days

1881 Plank Lane
WILLIAM H STEEL 27 coal miner b. Blackburn
Kate 24 b. Warrington
Christopher 6m b.Golborne

1881 Hindley, 73 Derby Lane
James Jones 51 shoemaker
Dinah 50
Hannah 15 cotton mill doffer
James 13
Peter 10
John Thomas 8
all born Warrington

St Thomas Golborne
21 Dec 1879
WILLIAM HENRY STEELE x 25 collier
father Christopher, Packer
Kate Jones x 23
father James, shoemaker
witnesses : Christopher Greenhalgh
Mary Ann Greenhalgh x

(St Peter Hindley
12 April 1875
Christopher Greenhalgh 20 collier, Derby Lane
father Edward, weaver
Mary Ann Jones x 21 Derby Lane
father James, shoemaker
witnesses : James Gregory x
Margaret Booth x
so the Mary Ann Greenhalgh that witnessed Kate Jones marriage was her older sister)

So Kate married William and had the following children recorded at St Thomas, Golborne
CHRISTOPHER STEELE born 15 Sept. 1880 buried 16 Jan 1882
JAMES STEELE born 18 July 1882 buried 13 Dec 1882
WILLIAM HENRY STEELE born 22 Oct 1883.............................................

then her husband died and was buried 28 Feb 1885.
She probably returned back to Hindley and her family.

Kate then married
St Peter Hindley
24 Oct 1885
William Battersby 33 working in a mill
87 Derby Lane, father Richard mill worker
Kate Steel x 28 widow
73 Derby Lane,
father James Jones, Shoemaker
witnesses John Lovatt , Hannah Jones

Kate then had a daughter :
St Peter Hindley
Sarah Battersby child of William and Kate
born 22 Jul 1886

this is where the trail of Kate dries up.

I can find no obvious trace of either Kate or William.
Found William in 1891 in Ashton in Makerfield, age 37 lodger general labourer born Golborne mistranscribed as Bathrsly but looks like Battersby on image. Importantly he is a widow. This might explain why Sarah is described as a lodger and not niece in 1891 because her father was sending money for her keep.

Sarah Battersby in the next census turns up living with her aunt and uncle.
This makes Christopher Greenhalgh her cousin.

1891 Warrington
Christopher Greenhalgh 35 general labourer b. Bolton
Mary A 36 laundress b. Warrington
Dinah 15 b. Hindley
Edward 13 b. Hindley
Mary 7 b. Golborne
(about same time William Henry Steele born)
Christopher 2 b. Warrington
Sarah Battersby 4 lodger b. Hindley

On the 1901 census there are two Sarah Battersby's born Warrington
1) age 17 housemaid to the Malkin family in Warrington
2) Sarah Battusby age 16 also living in Warrington
there is only one birth registered in 1884. The second one above is probably her, parents Simeon Battersby and Mary Jane Chadwick.

but I think the Sarah Battersby born Hindley was still with the Greenhalghs and looks like she has taken their name described as daughter, of course it might simply be a mistake by the enumerator especially as the birth places are muddled up. The image is quite faint but it looks like Sarah is working in the cotton mill.

1901 29 Scott St. Warrington
Christopher Greenhalgh 46 wiredrawers labourer b. Bolton
Mary Ann 48 b. Warrington
Dinah 25 fustian cutter b. Hindley
Mary 17 ? weaver b. Hindley
Christopher 12 b. Golborne
Sarah 14 cotton (spinner?) b. Warrington
Edward 22 carter b. Hindley

The following are just suggestions taken from free BMD index
It looks like (Uncle) Christopher died in 1903 age 46, Warrington
Dinah Greenhalgh married 1903 Warrington
(possibly to George Monks, Dinah Monks died Warrington 1956 age 80)
Edward Greenhalgh died 1923 Warrington age 46
Mary Greenhalgh married 1908 Warrington
If the above do belong to this Greenhalgh family it suggests the family stayed in Warrington. It also seems from the 1911 census index that they were still living in Warrington but cannot find Sarah on the 1911 census index.

looking at Sarah Battersby, Warrington there is a death in 1906 age 18 "Sarah Elizabeth Battersby" and a marriage 1904 "Sarah Hannah Battersby".
............................................................................................................
I then looked for the family of William Battersby.
The following are possible candidates, we know from his marriage his father is Richard and Kate's family has no Sarah, so was daughter Sarah named for William's mother.

1861 Golborne, Bridge St.
Richard Battersby 30 cotton fac opt b. West Houghton
Sarah 29 cotton reeler b. Golborne
William 6 b. Golborne
Mary Ann 2 b. Golborne
James Hart 51 boarder assistant engineer b. Wigan

St. Thomas Golborne
30 March 1856
Richard Battersby 26 maker up
father James, Labourer
Sarah Clayton x 24
father Henry, shoemaker
witnesses Peter Davies x, Elizabeth Battersby

1871 Golborn, School Street
Betty Clayton 67 W b. Lowton
Hugh 26 Cotton spinner b. Golborne
Thomas 24 cotton spinner b. Golborne**
William Barrow 35 Blacksmith b. Ashton
Louise Barrow 33 b Golborne
Margaret 8 b. Golborne
William H. 3 b. Golborne
William Battersby 16 cotton operative b. Golborne

** I think this Thomas Clayton married SARAH BENNETT at St Thomas, Golborne 21 Aug 1871

1881 Oldham, Crompton, 32 Small Brook
Edward Hall 27
Ellen 24 b. Golborne
Mary Ann 2
William Battersby 26 boarder, stoker b. Golborne

Our earliest family.

I'm sorry for not posting but exams have gotten in the way. And I have gotten waylaid by history books.

However my favourite site has just posted some more baptisms for Warrington which completes  our earliest HOWARD family. I have given the burials as well, although the early burials before 1779 have not been posted yet.

St. Elphin, Warrington.
1.Robt. Howard bap. 18 Oct 1772 son of Iseah+Betty, staymar.

14.George Howard bap. 19 Jul 1795 son of Hosea+Betty, staymaker
  bur. 7 Oct 1796 George, son of Hosea+Betty, staymaker age 1y 3m

Note different spellings of Hosea.
I may very well have made mistakes here, please tell me if you find one.
Need to check pre 1779 burials.
A staymaker made corsets, it was a low paid job. They did not use whale bone but whale whiskers????? I would love to find out more about this occupation, if anyone knows of a book or internet site please let me know.

Now the following are just notes of interest. I do not know if they belong to us or not.
................................................................................
................................................................................
There is a burial for James Howard  20 Jan 1799 Mariner, drowned, age 19 (b. 1780)
There is a burial for George Howard 8 Mar 1814, Bridge Street, age 90 (b. 1724)

Hosea Howard is an unusual name. Putting it into the familysearch site (IGI) there is the following  marriage.
Saint Nicholas, Liverpool
batch M005991 (1604-1788)
1 Dec 1771
Hosea Howard + Henrietta Elizabeth Done

And we have a baptism for Henrietta at
St. Peter, Liverpool batch P020271
Henrietta Eliz. Done born 19 May 1755
bap. 1 June 1755  father, Ralph.

Could this be our Betty?

She would have been 16 when she married Hosea.
She would have been 40 when the last child, George was born.
Was her second son Ralph named for her father?

Was this her parents marriage :
St. Nicholas
10 Nov 1754
Ralph Done + Mary Garret

(There are hits for Henrietta Garret on the IGI)

Now there is a Ralph Done buried at St. Elphin Warrington 16 June 1782 age 55.
Could his be (Henrietta) Betty's father?
He would have been born about 1727.
In 1754 when he married Mary he would have been about 27, so he might have been married before.

At St. Peter, Liverpool burial 13 June 1766 Mary Done wife of Ralph Done, Sailor.
Ralph would have been about 39.

Then there is a marriage at St. Elphin, Warrington 10 Aug 1769
Ralph Done+Jane Matley
Ralph would have been about 42.
Ralph and Jane had the following children.
Ellen Done bap. 20 May 1770
Ralph Done bap. 21 June 1772
Margaret Done bap. 29 May 1774
Catherine Done bap. 10 Nov 1776
Martha Done bap. 16 Sep 1781
buried 12 Apr 1782 dau of Ralph and Jane, Mariner age 7m

So, could Ralph have been a sailor involved with inland trade, sailing from Liverpool up the river to Warrington - perhaps in the salt trade?

Quotes taken from "History of Liverpool, 1700-1900 by Sheila Marriner"

The eighteenth century witnessed a very rapid expansion of Liverpool's commerce. It was an era of privateers, of slave traders and of war, but even more important was the rapid development of the industrial hinterland. With industrial and commercial expansion and the building of new roads and canals, people flocked into the town from the surrounding districts and from Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The population of Liverpool grew from approx. 5,000 in 1700 to 20,000 in 1750 and to 53,853 in 1790.

The development of the town during the 18th century was unplanned and uncontrolled. The streets were narrow and tortuous. Even main streets were generally unpaved, badly lighted and very narrow......A close network of dirty, narrow courts and alleys sprang up behind the main streets.......Housing conditions were equally bad....The water supply of the town was also inadequate....Socially, 18th century Liverpool lacked elegance and culture. It was essentially a boisterous, seafaring community, its outlook influenced by the hard, turbulent life of sailing, privateering, smuggling, and slave trading. Rioting was a common occurrence and drunkenness was rife. The lower classes, degraded and drink-sodden, revelled in cock-fighting, dog-fighting, and bull-baiting.

Martha Norbury.

Thanks to Stan finding the marriage of George Howard I have been trying to track Martha Norbury's family. From the census we know she was born in Halton parish - Astmore. And we know she was born about 1810. From the christening records on Ancestry it would seem that this is her family.

Halton, Cheshire.
Baptism's
27 Jan 1807 George Norbury son of William and Mary.
2 April 1809 Martha Norbury dau. of William and Mary.
14 Jul 1811 Thomas Norbury son of  William and Mary.
8 Aug 1813 Mary Norbury dau. of William and Mary.
31 Jan 1820 Anne Norbury dau. of William and Mary.
28 Jul 1822 Eleanor Norbury dau. of William and Mary.

But this is as far as I can get. I have been unable to trace any of them on the census.
George Howard and Martha married at Grappenhall in 1824, that makes Martha only 15 or 16.
There is only one other Norbury marriage at Grappenhall in 1822 Thomas Norbury and Betty Green but this is too early to be the marriage of her brother Thomas.

There is a 7 year gap between Mary and Anne. Were these part of the same family?

There are other Norburys in Halton parish.
I have not found a marriage for William Norbury to a Mary.
No baptism for William Norbury in Halton.

Is this possibly Martha's sister Eleanor shortened to Ellen, no Ellen baptism in Halton, age out by a couple of years.
1851 Runcorn, Budworth
Ellen Norbury 27 unmarried servant born Halton.

Saturday 24 April 2010

Our direct ancestors.

I think the line following back from John Howard and Elizabeth Howard is :
(parents)
Thomas Howard married Jane Bennett
(grandparents)
George Howard married Martha Norbury*
James Bennett married Fanny (Sixsmith ?)
That is as far as I can get with the Bennett line.
(greatgrandparents)
Ralph Howard married Hannah Corless
(greatgreatgrandparents)
Hosea Howard married Betty ?
And that is where we hit our brick wall.
*Stan has found the marriage for  George Howard and Martha Norbury
5 March 1824, Grappenhall, Cheshire
Many thanks to Stan.
.................................................................
I have posted all the info about Thomas Howard family.
I am working on George Howards family.
When we get back to Ralph you will see there are a lot of name duplicates.
................................................................
Hosea and Betty had loads of children, but nearly all of them died as children.
Ralph and Hannah had two sons  -
Hosea who married Ann and had the following:
            Ralph b. 1824
            William b. 1827
            Elizabeth b. 1829
           John b. 1833
            Ellen b. 1835
            Hosea b. 1839
            Mary A. b. 1844
            Hannah b. 1847
George who married Martha and had the following
          Hannah b. 1827
          William b. 1829
          Thomas b. 1831
          John b. 1833
          Mary b. 1835
          George b. 1842

In 1841 these two brothers and their families were living within doors of each other in Latchford.  There were two other Howard families in Latchford at that time but I do not think they are related to these. George left sometime to go to Astley in 1851, but his son Thomas was back in Latchford for his marriage in the summer to Jane.

There is a third family on the 1841 census which would appear to tie in, thats the one you found Stan with Ralph the father and one of his sons Hosea. Hosea Howard is not a common name, try putting it in Ancestry. Was Ralph the son of Ralph and Hannah? The problem is that on the 1841 census as you pointed out Stan it says he was born in Ireland, and this Ralph died before the next census.
Ralph and Ellen had the following children
       George b. 1821
       Hosea b. 1823
       John b. 1824
       William b. 1830
       Hannah b. 1834
       Ralph b. 1835
       Elizabeth b. 1839
       Samuel b. 1843
I just keep having the feeling that they tie in but have no proof.
